Mt. HYMETTUS – athens investments

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Hymettus also Hymettos is a mountain range in the Athens area of Attica.

If you are interested in nature walks in forests and tiny hidden byzantine monasteries, Mt. Hymettus has quite a lot to offer.

A PARADISE FOR ALL

Mt. Hymettus is a beautiful mountain, tall and imposing, stretching its one-piece mass in a NNE-SSW direction and enclosing the Athenian basin from its southern and eastern side. It is approx. 20km long, 6km wide and 65km in perimeter, with its highest peak being Evzonas (1026m. altitude)
The name ‘’Hymettus’’ has survived unaltered till our days, with its roots lost in the depth of the centuries (greek place-names ending in – tuss are of pre-hellenic origin).
Ancient Athenians have founded here a sanctuary of Zeus and Apollo, remains of which can be seen next to the country-church of Profitis Elias on the slope overlooking Vyliza Koropiou suburb. They also extracted marble from the quarries of Kakorema, over Kareas (part of Parthenon’s footing is built with Hymettian marbles).
Mt Hymettus is covered by a mixed forest of pine-trees, cypresses and wild olive trees. It was famous in antiquity for its thyme and its thyme-scented honey. It is still covered with thyme all over, as well as many other bushes and wild flowers, forming a habitat for foxes, rabbits, skunks, weasels and porcupines, as well as more than one hundred species of birds.
In Mt Hymettus there are many trails, most of them well-trodden, suitable for all types of hikers. Recently, the Association for the Protection and Development of Hymettus (SPRAY) has initiated a signposting project in the trails of Mt. Hymettus, in cooperation with TERRAIN. In this area of the mountain, there are 4 signposted trails, marked in this map.
